MATERIALS, COLOUR & spaceS
Jim Biddulph’s multifaceted practice spans design, build and writing, with a particular focus on materiality, making and colour.
Having joined one of London’s first material resource spaces, Material Lab, in 2007, Jim was an integral part of the studio's vibrant development for ten years. This exposure to the world of materiality has led to nearly two decades of experience researching, sourcing and communicating materials. Alongside this, Jim has been commissioned to design and build numerous exhibition spaces at the likes of 100% Design, Clerkenwell Design Week, UK Construction Week, Surface Design Show and Milan Furniture Fair.
A Design Insider Ambassador, Jim has spent the last six years writing regular features based on his material findings for the publication, championing the circular economy and highlighting projects that take a long-term view of people and the planet. An overlapping interest in colour application has led Jim to collaborate with Dulux on numerous projects, including the international Colour Futures panel and the Colour in Design Award.
This varied career and insatiable appetite for discovering new processes, techniques, and materials have also lent themselves to teaching a rich mix of creative courses at universities around the country. In 2025, Jim is also embarking on an adventurous project in Siargao, the Philippines, where he will project manage a team of architectural students and graduates in building sustainable farmers’ lodges for CAUKIN Studio and Lokal Lab.
